The Camera in question from yesterday
I
!!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!!
about this Camaro convertible I saw on the way to work that I thought was $1200, but then it looked in the pic like it said $12,000 on the windshield. So, I took the time this morning to (safely) get closer to see through the fence. It does indeed say $12,000. This, of course, should turn it from NP into CP of the year.
Which led me to think, why would anyone think they can get that much for an ‘89 Camaro? So, I went on CL to see what the market looks like. Most people in this area are selling these and the following gen Camaro in the $4000 to $10,000 range. I even found !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! very similar to the one I saw for $12,499 (it’s been up for almost three weeks now). This is making me wonder if there’s something I don’t know about these cars, or it these sellers just “know what they have”. I have a hard time seeing an ‘89 anything from GM being worth over $10k.
similar car on Dallas CL

3rd gen F-bodies of a certain pedigree are starting to pull collector numbers. They’re the next in line.
When you said $1200 I checked the area code to see if it was near me. If it was, and you didn’t buy it, I would have.

I know this is hard for you (and me) to stomach, but a clean IROC is actually a freaking CLASSIC now. Not only that, but many of us that dreamed about these in the 1980's actually have some money laying around to buy one.
I’m not an F-body fan, but I could kinda see a really nice IROC going for that price, I guess (note - not based on any research at all).

Yeah, without checking, I knew that would be extraordinary. I felt I should own up to my error publicly once I checked it out.
I like these cars a lot, but they’re still mullet-mobiles. I just can’t see collector status, unless they are factory clean and ultra low miles.

If it’s clean and has the right options, $12k is not too bad. It’s a NP if it’s a 1LE, but that would be a hell of a find.

Like I just typed to crowmolly, I love them, but they’re still mullet-mobiles to me. If someone had that money lying around, I’d hope they’d use it to redo the power plant and make it actually walk its talk.

I’ll never know. If I know I’m not buying, I won’t waste the seller’s time.
Come to think of it, I don’t know how to even contact the seller.

these things were hot shit back then; I was just entering high school and the Camaro/Firebird and Fox Mustang were finally hammering nails into the coffin of the Malaise Era. An IROC-Z with the TPI 350 was something else after a decade and a half of wheezy 350s and 400s which could barely belch out 150 hp. If you had this underhood, you were the fuckin’ man :
what you’re seeing now is guys my age with money driving the price of these up, because these are the cars we wish we could have had in high school. Just like the Boomers drove up the prices of ‘60s and ‘70s muscle cars into the stratosphere.

I used to walk the Chevy car lot in the 80's and salivate on the berlinetta camaros and think “someday”. Funny how now that someday has arrived, I’m rolling over 70s and earlier cars.

I’d love to have a clean third gen B4C but there’s close to zero chance of that happening within my budget

Me neither. Not if it’s going to be more than $1,200.

I feel exactly the same way as you do- I wasn’t even a big fan of them in 1985, let alone now. I was dreaming of mid-60's muscle cars at that time.
But there’s plenty of people around our age who do like these things, squeaks, rattles, and all.
You could certainly get these things to breathe a bit better and make more power, but IIRC, most of them only had 305's under the hood. At some point, they put a 350 in, which ought to be an engine you could build up a bit.

Maybe it’s because of my generation, but $12,000 seems absolutely ludicrous for an F-body in any shape, condition or trim. Hell, I’d say the same at $6k.

I was going to make a joke, “Just wait and see when the last-gen Firebird begins shooting up in price.” Apparently that day is already here.

One of my fantasy projects has been to take one of those F-body Camaros and swap a ZL1 engine in it. Probably go so fast the body panels would rip off.

I’d say $6k is good for one in pristine shape, but that’s as far as I’d go, and I’m not your generation.

Worth it.

I’ve a had a pair of F-Bodies in my lifetime, a 2nd Gen and a 3rd Gen, and they were absolute pieces of shit. Granted, I was either the seventh owner or fifteenth owner for those cars, but even new, those were total shitboxes as a friend of mine’s parents were the original owners of an 85 that was always breaking down.
You can get misty-eyed all you want and think you’ll be the King of Radwood if you get one. I say do yourself a favor and leave the shitboxes of the Eighties in the Eighties.

This is what I was thinking. If I could get one running well enough for a grand or less, it would be nice for leisurely rides with the top down, but that’s about it. I don’t get the collector’s prices people are asking.

Cars that don’t move = CP
You’ll notice that CL is packed with these. Anything good at a good price sells fast.
